HLTPAT005 - Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing (TRAINING ROOM)

This nationally accredited unit is delivered over one day (approx. 9 hours) with a short online pre-training assessment required to be completed before commencement (1-3 hours).

Pre-training is an entry requirement and provides essential background knowledge. Pre-training includes reading, research and answering questions.

Training is delivered face to face in our Brisbane classroom. Our dedicated team of professional trainers and assessors are also industry qualified Collectors. Our Trainers adopt a holistic approach to delivery capturing the interest of each participant and focusing on interactive learning. Our delivery methodology ensures that graduates can apply knowledge immediately in the workplace.

Introduction
HLTPAT005 - Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing unit of competency meets the training requirements of the relevant Australian Standards. We ensure our training programs and assessment strategies are relevant and focus on current workplace best practice to meet employer needs for drug and alcohol testing.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation‚ Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Target Audience
This unit applies to individuals working in collection centres‚ in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.

Learning Methods
Learning consists of a short pre-training knowledge assessment prior to an interactive hands-on training day covering three testing methods:
  • breath alcohol testing
  • oral fluid - saliva testing
  • urine testing

  • Hands-on breath alcohol, urine and saliva drug testing
  • Familiarity of Australian Standards, Legislation and Regulations
  • Impacts, effects and symptoms of drugs and alcohol
  • Privacy issues and risk assessment including safety and PPE
  • Infection control
  • Consent Forms, Chain of Custody and the legal implications
  • Confirm collection requirements
  • Prepare for collection procedure
  • Collect specimen
  • Follow post collection procedures
  • Basic conflict resolution skills
